This township was erected in 1865, prior to which year it had been a part of Eagle Township. Richiand was among
the last in the county to become settled, and it is altogether probable that the original development enterprise
here instituted was initiated and successfully carried forward by William Linder, who here settled in the year
1849 and who became the founder of the prosperous German settlement in the northeastern part of the township. Peter
Eschbach, Sr., came here with his family, in 1852, but his death occurred before the close of that year. His son
Peter became one of the substantial citizens of the. township. Conrad Freeman came in 1854, and erected the first
permanent house on the site of the present Village of Tonica. Other early settlers were Asa and J. L. Dunham, Elwood
Grist, Reuben Hall, Cutting and Dana B. Clark, Robert Clark, E. A. Clark, W. Keller, Isaac Vale, Israel Jones,
Andrew Foss, William Copeland and Alfred Lathrop.
The census of 1920 gives the population of Richiand Township, including the Village of Lenore, as 750, the record
by the 1910 census having been 835.
Following is a list of the first officials of the township (1865): Supervisor, Isaac Vale; clerk, G. W. Keller;
assessor, Samuel White; collector, William Lauf; highway commissioners, William Linden, H. Spellmyer, Dennis Sullivan;
justice of the peace, William White; constable, Timothy Weld.
